Everyone knows about the growing number of obese children in the US. This article talks about a consequence of that, earlier onset of Type 2 diabetes. This type of diabetes is acquired, not inherited, and it used to be called ‘adult-onset’ diabetes, because that is who developed this form of diabetes.
But now, children are developing it in increasing numbers. This seems to be in large part due to obesity, which is a known risk factor for type 2 diabetes. The article also points out though, that it can be hard to keep children thin. The kids are bombarded with ads everywhere for fast food, snacks, soda, ‘energy drinks’, and so on. Their schools often sell this stuff, and offer minimally nutritious food in the cafeteria.
The article also points out that one, sometimes fast food or packaged food is cheaper. I dispute that, as beans, rice, veggies, fruits, can go a lot further and are much better for everyone. The article also points out that some kids live in neighborhoods where their parents do not want them to play outside, as it can be dangerous.
There is no easy answer for this. But as consumers and voters, we can try to provide safe parks and playgrounds for children, and see that in school at least, they are offered healthy food to eat.
