Breakfast matters

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I know you’ve heard this before but maybe you never understood why. Having just finished my breakfast, I thought I’d lay out a few facts and suggestions about breakfast.

Eating breakfast, particularly including whole grains in your breakfast, can help with weight loss, diabetes prevention and heart health. Breakfast is an easy way to get the fiber you need. It can also help you feel full, to avoid the ‘just one donut’ from the break room at work in the morning. This article at WebMD discusses findings about breakfast and whole grains from Northwestern University and Harvard.

It helps with weight loss because your body burns fat while you sleep. Having done all that work while you were sleeping, your body now needs fuel for all the activities of your day. The only diet website I frequent, Anne Collins Weight Loss Program, has a lot of dieting tips. This one about breakfast is short and to the point.

As for my breakfast, I had plain Quaker Instant Oatmeal, made with water and some added Grape-Nuts cereal. I like the extra body and crunch the Grape-Nuts give the oatmeal. Then I add a tablespoon of Polaner All-Fruit Strawberry spread. My drink this morning was this new V-8 that I love, called Essential Antioxidants V-8. It has lycopene, and the antioxidants A, C and E. And it’s just a little bit lower in sodium.

What did you have for breakfast? Will it help you lose or maintain your weight? Did it provide energy and fiber for your body and for your day? If not, try to change. Eat a better breakfast and feel the difference it can make.
