Which supplements? – real health part 4

Part 4

In part 3 of my real health series, I laid out the case why you need to take supplements. Now I’m going to let you know what I take and why. It’s a good base, and it would be enough for you to get healthy. I will reiterate that this is based on my experiences. Please see the disclaimer at the bottom of the page. You know your body best.

First is a good whole foods multivitamin. What’s wrong with the standard kind you find in a drugstore? The vitamins and minerals in those are produced chemically. These do not work as well as vitamins that come naturally in foods. In addition, vitamins in foods do not work alone. All the nutrients, phytochemicals and other minerals in food works together to enhance the action and effectiveness of all of them. The processes behind this is not fully understood, and not all the beneficial substances in foods have been analyzed and they are not likely to be anytime soon.

I use Nature’s Way Alive! Whole Food Energizer Multivitamin vitamins. Since I’m a woman, I take the ones with iron. Men may want to buy the Alive! Whole Food Energizer Multivitamin Iron Free vitamins. These vitamins are made with green foods, amino acids, vegetables, fruits, mushroom blend, digestive enzymes, healthy omega-3’s and citrus. You can buy them online or at most healthy supermarkets. For a more complete review of this supplement, Newstarget.com has an excellent article.

If you live in the northern part of the US or are dark-skinned, you will want to take cod liver oil pills on a daily basis. This is the best way to get vitamin D into your body to supplement what you get from sunlight. I use Nature’s Way EFA Gold Cod Liver Oil. They come in softgel form and are PCB and mercury free. However, don’t get carried away and take too many all at once. You are problably deficent in vitamin D and it will take a while to build up your stores. You will want to make sure to get your quota of sunlight every day as well.

The next few suggested supplements all provide antioxidants and other healing support for your body. One is called Astaxanthin, an amazingly powerful antioxidant. I buy mine from a company called Nutrex Hawaii. They sell it under the name BioAstin by Nutrex. I believe that they have the best technology and location for producing this substance, which is a microalgae, and is also the substance that gives wild salmon their red color.

The other supplements I want to talk about are green foods (also known as whole foods or superfoods) and the microalgae spirulina and chlorella. There is so much to say about these that they will have their own article, the next one in the series on real health.
