Shopping observations

I have written before about this Newstarget article, Healthy foods are actually cheaper than popular manufactured foods. It is an excellent article and please read it if you haven’t already.

In it, Mike Adams mentions going shopping and seeing what is in people’s carts. The other day I went to a Wal-Mart Supercenter. I needed some groceries and if you shop carefully, you can buy healthy food there and it’s cheaper. And I try to live frugally.

This was on a weekday, midday. Kids are still in school here. As I wandered the food aisles, I did look at the people shopping and what they had in their carts.

There were a few children there, between the ages of 4 and 10. All but two were showing signs of overweight, with one quite a bit overweight. All of their mothers were also overweight, a couple very much so. One had a large bag of cheetos snack size bags and had opened it and gave her kids each one to eat as they shopped. Most of their carts had juice drinks (that have almost no real fruit juice), sugary cereal, processed foods, lunchmeats, cookies and no vegetables or real fruits.

There were a few women, mostly middle-aged and older, who had healthier food. Fruits, veggies, frozen veggies, and other healthy or at least healthier food.

It was hard to see this, knowing what I know. I just wanted to stop these women and say ‘your kids are hyperactive, fat and this is why.’

Think about what you buy the next time you go to the store. Read labels, and buy food that is good for you. Not just what’s advertised or what’s quick to make.

It’s important for your health, your kids health and their future.
