What is "fan fiction"? Well, there are a lot of wonderful Web sites with learned explanations, and eventually the Cave will be linked to them for your edification and amusement.
However, the (relatively) short answer is that people get so excited and impressed about a certain book, movie, or TV series that they want to write their own stories about the situations and characters presented. You've experiences the less-than-satisfactory conclusion to an episode or the feeling that whole episodes were missing from a favorite show. Many people take action against this frustration by writing fan fiction. Name a popular TV series or movie ... you probably can find fan fiction for it on the Web. (Fan fiction has existed for decades longer than the Web, however. Trekkers circulated Star Trek fan fiction via regular mail and high-tech mimeograph. Bonus points to anyone out there who loves the smell of freshly mimeographed documents in the morning.)
Writing fan fiction is a great way to learn the craft of writing, too. You can practice writing all the elements of a good story without having to create the world, the backstory, and the characters from scratch. Try it, you'll like it!
